FREAK MOTIF wants you to dance your ass off, get high, and make love in the Bow River.
They are a collective of musicians from Calgary, AB, that got together in the summer of 2009. Their first jam was a parade along 17th ave one Wednesday night. People came running off of restaurant patios to party in Tomkins park til the police told everyone to go home.
That energy started the Wednesday night tradition: musicians from all sorts of backgrounds getting together to play original music, always from the soul, always improvised. Sometimes there were 35 people, sometimes there were 3. Sometimes it was just horns and drums, for a while there was a harp player, and once there was a bagpiper.
Gradually the Wednesday night jam became FREAK MOTIF, the band: an 8+ piece dance party featuring a full horn section, singers, rappers, breakdancers and graffiti artists. They’ve played over 60 shows together and toured across Alberta and BC, bringing the jam to house parties, street festivals, the Kicking Horse Sun Splash Festival, Bermuda Shorts Day, and the Calgary Improv Festival with Colin Mochrie.
Every show is different, with the audience inspiring the Freaks to create their unique hypnotic grooves live. Some of the band’s musical influences are: the Meters, the Roots, Parliament/Funkadelic, Phish, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, and the Budos Band.
Merging breaks and glitch intensity with funk and classic music from the 30’s and beyond, Defunk has surely made a name for himself in the electronic music world. He has helped create the new fresh style of ghettoswing, combining elements of big band and swing music with breaks and hip hop. He has also received support from the biggest names in ghetto funk, and experimented fusing bass music with funk, blues, soul, arabian sounds and much much more. He has been released on several different international labels, but holds true that giving his music away for free is the best option.
His live performance is always one of a journey. He switches tempos, moods and sounds to fit the time and place, and brings the audience for a ride that explores many facets of bass music. Whether he’s mashing up classic songs you grew up with or smashing your face off with new beats and rhythm’s, he is guaranteed to make you move!
From the dark depths of the gypsy carnival comes it’s newest sideshow act, BASS CARAVAN!
Jump on board as this charismatic entertainer spins a musical tale of unique Gyspy Funk, Carnival Breaks and Swinging Bass that will enthral & entertain even the most discerning of crowds. With sets jumping across all genres and encompassing more than it’s fair share of “whomp” you can be sure that the mixture of organic traditional beats and electro based bump and grind will get your feet moving and your but shakin’!
Isis Graham has been on the forefront of Calgary dance culture since 1997. Whether you found her organizing warehouse raves in the nineties or headlining clubs across Canada in the millennium, she was there, she’s here to stay and more excited about music than ever. Largely influenced in the early days by the stripped down, tracky Chicago house sounds of legends such as Dj Sneak, Mark Farina and Dj Heather, her DJ sets defined her as the queen of funky house in Calgary. You can always expect big bass, big funk and a whole lotta soul from her Dj sets.
DJ Sele Sell may be new behind the decks but her love and appreciation for music is forever timeless. Her unbridled love for quality hip hop beats and funky rhythms is contagious when she’s behind the decks, and the roar of the dance floor crowd is sure fire evidence of her beat dropping talents. Hailing from the mountain town of Banff, we’re proud to have her join us and guarantee that she’ll get this party off to just the right start.
Le Cirque de la Nuit is especially excited to present to all of you, the Vibe Tribe Gypsy Circus! Vibe Tribe Gypsy Circus Society is a hypnotic, mesmerizing and inspiring experience unlike any other! By incorporating sultry tribal belly dance with playful object manipulation Vibe Tribe creates an interactive dance experience that will ignite your own creative spirit.
Their recent showcase, Luminous held back in November packed a sold out audience and it’s popularity has led to a second showcase coming up in early February! Their 13 person troupe of tribal belly dancers, performers, fire and glow spinners and all encompassing characters are stirring audiences everywhere and it is with sincere honor and excitement that we get to showcase their exceptional talents here at KINTALA.
The vain, vindictive, voguish Visha Loo is Calgary’s own fucked-up fetish drama-queen with, quite literally, a unique twist…
“I took up an interest in contortion because I wanted to run away with the circus”, Visha explains. “Five years ago I could not even touch my toes, and with a lot of hard work and a lot of training I have now performed over 60 shows over the last four years.”
Having found herself in demand for her show that combines, as she says, “horror meets Disney”, her performance highlights include elbow-stands and “going down the stairs like Regan (The Exorcist).” In particular she likes the way a body can bend and I like when people say ‘eww’.
Her individualistic look combines the aforementioned Disney and horror influences, and in particular she enjoys “over the top fashion shows.” Even her appearance is suitably fucked up: diminutive in stature, Visha has 30 facial and body piercings, an aesthetic she has embraced since she was in her teens.
Visha also co-runs Crimson Events, putting on fetish events in Calgary. Having done 14 shows to date with international stars like Mosh and Masuimi Max.
The sultry ladies of La Gogue are no mystery to Calgary’s thriving electronic scene. Appearing at festivals, night clubs and special events all across Western Canada ( including the Shambhala Music Festival this past year ), La Gogue has quickly become a top notch provider of sure fire entertainment. More than your average GoGo dancers, these performers are true visual artists with an abundance of passion and talent and we couldn’t be happier to have them as part of our premier performance!
We will have a limited number of tickets available at the door for $20. We highly suggest that you come early if you don’t have a ticket! Thank you Calgary for all your amazing support!!!
